Cala Luna
The coast of Baunei and its pearls
Cala Luna rises on the border between the municipalities of Baunei and Dorgali, where the “Codula de Elune” ends. Cala Luna is a small isthmus with very fine white sand, which faces east on the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Orosei, one of the most evocative stretches of the Mediterranean. To the west, instead, it is characterized by a small natural lake of fresh water, the point of arrival of the waters of the “codula de Eluna“: this lake, that changes every year, is one of the peculiarities of the beach. The other major characteristic of the cove is a beautiful series of five caves that rise to the north of the beach; it‘s still a natural shelter for fauna and for hikers who visit the beach every year: we advise you to drop by and enjoy the view towards the sea from the inside of one of the “caves”.
Cala Luna, which in Sardinian is called “Elune“, is bounded both to the south and to the north by the cliff overlooking the sea, which touches about 300 meters in this area. Some parts of the crag are bolted and attract numerous climbers every year. Typical of this area is a particular volcanic stone, called obsidian. The territory, however, remains for the most part characterized by limestone rock, typical of the Mediterranean vegetation that surrounds the beach, a common trait of the entire territory of Baunei. In the winter of 1997 a bad flood took away the oleanders, once a characteristic feature of Cala Luna; today, you can see young oleanders appearing here and there, a sign that the beach is recovering its ancient splendor. Besides the typical Mediterranean flora, Cala Luna is a point of particular interest also for the fauna; looking up at the sky it is possible to spot rare species such as the golden eagle, the peregrine falcon and the Corsican seagull. On the beach it is not unusual to meet wild boars, which from time to time visit the fragrant cooler bags of hikers and bathers.
Why precisely Cala Luna? The name derives from the one given by the shepherds of the last century, who reached the beach on foot from the small town of Baunei, passing through Cala Sisine, for a total of about eight/nine hours of walking. Hence the name of Cala Luna, it was in fact precisely “how to get to the Moon” (and in those days, on the Moon, no one had yet gone). During the mid-twentieth century, the beach was one of the most important centers for the collection of coal, produced in the furnace of the Supramonte of Baunei. In that period, in fact, they used to refer to the beach as “Portu Elune“.
